Woman describes Tinder terror date with charged California surgeon

October 2024 · 9 minute read

A woman has told how she narrowly escaped the clutches of 'super creepy' California surgeon Dr Grant Robicheaux after he lured her to his apartment for a dip in his hot tub.

Robicheaux - charged alongside his girlfriend Cerissa Laura Riley on Wednesday for allegedly drugging and raping two intoxicated women with possibly hundreds more alleged victims out there – met Lauren Hayden on dating app Tinder last October.

The 24-year-old math and physics instructor thought the handsome doctor was too good to be true when he began flirting with her online.

So when the wealthy surgeon invited her over for dinner at his luxury Newport Beach apartment, the offer was difficult to turn down.

But the encounter quickly turned sinister when Robicheaux, 38, began to make unwanted sexual advances towards her and she fled his apartment after just two hours.

This comes as a neighbor of the surgeon told DailyMailTV that her mother Coranne Gibson, 81, was woken by screams and a woman yelling, 'Help me! Help me!' in October 2016.

Mrs Gibson called the police and officers later informed neighbors that the incident was a 'private sexual matter.'

Mrs Gibson's daughter, Renee Gibson-Milch, 58, said: 'The screams were so loud they woke my mom. She was terrified. She woke my dad and they called 911.

'They heard a woman screaming, ''Help me! Help me!'' It must have been in the early hours. They were really, really worried and upset by it.

'I've spoken to them since news of Grant's arrest broke and the memories have all come back.

'My mom remembers going out into the street in her nightclothes with my dad. Other neighbors came out then, too, and waited for the police to arrive.'

For Lauren the string of claims against Robicheaux don't come as a surprise.

She told DailyMailTV about her 'scary' date with the surgeon who appeared on a Bravo reality show called 'Online Dating Rituals of the American Male'.

'He invited me over for dinner and asked me to go in the Jacuzzi,' she recalls.

'We went in, I had a bathing suit on and he kept trying to rip it off and I told him to stop. He was controlling and aggressive and started to scare me.

'He then took me into the bedroom and tried to take my clothes off again.

'I told him he was coming off aggressive and wasn't being a gentleman and I needed to leave.

'I put my skirt on but he lifted it up and grabbed at my a** and at that point I left.'

Lauren, who lives in Laguna Beach, California, said the evening began normally enough and a male friend of Robicheaux's, who he described as his brother-in-law, joined them for dinner.

'I was so excited to meet him, I got my hair done, I brought a bottle of wine, I wore a nice dress, I looked cute,' she recalls.

'He said he wanted to cook dinner, I didn't think much of it, I was a little concerned about going to a guy's house on the first date, but I had checked him out online and he seemed okay - he was a surgeon after all.

'When I got there he had a really nice black Mercedes parked in his garage and his place was beautiful. He had a big TV, a nice kitchen, a wine distiller, Jacuzzi.

'He was dressed casually in board shorts, which was annoying as I was wearing a dress, but he told me these cool stories about his travels and told me he had created a jet pack and was using it out in Newport Beach.

'But as soon as his brother-in-law left he turned super creepy.  He didn't seem interested in anything I had to say.

'I even asked him what he liked in a woman and he replied, ''face, t*ts and a**', which I thought was creepy.

'He had this forced confidence and was coming on strong, aggressive.'

Lauren said: 'He tried to get me to massage him, give him a back massage, I rubbed his shoulders a little but I tried to avoid anything sexual. I thought we were going to get dinner and wine and walk around the peninsula, I didn't expect overt sexuality'

Lauren added: 'There's plenty of guys who want to get straight down to the action but he was more aggressive than the average guy.'

Robicheaux told Lauren that his sister lived with him in his apartment, although it's believed he lived with girlfriend and fellow accused Riley, 31.

'He tried to get me to massage him, give him a back massage, I rubbed his shoulders a little but I tried to avoid anything sexual,' Lauren recalls.

'I thought we were going to get dinner and wine and walk around the peninsula, I didn't expect overt sexuality.'

Lauren, who has had a bad run with men after dating jailed fraudster and pharma bro Martin Shkreli a few years ago who she described as 'horrible' and 'abusive', says it feels like America has 'lost a sense of normality'.

'Grant was very handsome and so smart, he could have any woman he wanted but he (allegedly) chose to rape them, that's about power.

'In this country, nothing seems to change.

'Everyone keeps saying I should feel lucky I wasn't raped, but what the hell? That's our standard?'

Robicheaux and Riley were arrested on September 12 after being charged with rape by use of drugs, oral copulation by anesthesia or controlled substance, and other crimes, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said.

Law enforcement is asking anyone with information to come forward and are concern they may have preyed on people at events and possibly the surgeon's patients

Investigators believe Robicheaux and his girlfriend trawled bars and restaurants in Newport Beach for victims and also hunted their prey at festivals over the past few years including Burning Man, the Dirtybird Campout festival and the Splash House festival in Palm Springs

He said investigators were examining thousands of videos and images on Robicheaux's phone.

Some videos show women who 'appear to be highly intoxicated beyond the ability to consent or resist, and they're barely responsive to the defendant's sexual advances,' Rackauckas said.

Authorities say women met the pair during social encounters where they became intoxicated and ended up at Robicheaux's apartment.

It emerged Wednesday night that investigators have identified three more possible victims.

Neighbor Gibson-Milch told DailyMail.com that she regularly saw Robicheaux.

'I've seen Grant around quite a bit. We've both got dogs. My dog, Maverick, knocked him over once and he got some grazes. He was fine about it.

'I even saw his girlfriend Cerissa on Tuesday. She was driving a golf cart. They have a golf cart because it's easier to use that to get around here than a car because of the parking. I had no idea then that they had been arrested.

'I think Cerissa does live there, too, her name is on a mailbox.

'Cerissa also has a son, aged between seven and ten I think. I have no idea where they are now.'

She added: 'Grant is known locally as the ''orthopedic surgeon'' or just ''the hot guy.''

'He's obviously a very good looking man and also a surgeon, so why he would need to do what he is accused of is totally confusing.'

In a statement on Wednesday, the accused pair's attorneys denied all allegations.

'All allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Grant Robicheaux and his girlfriend Cerissa Riley. They have been aware of these accusations for a number of months, and each of them will formally deny the truth of these allegations at their first opportunity in court.

'Dr. Robicheaux and Ms. Riley believe that such allegations do a disservice to, and dangerously undermine, the true victims of sexual assault, and they are eager to have the proper spotlight shed on this case in a public trial.'

Robicheaux and Riley were released on $100,000 bail each and are scheduled for arraignment October 24.
