June 2024 · 3 minute read

Comedian John Mulaney and artist Anna Marie Tendler are getting a divorce. Shockingly, Mulaney has wanted to get a divorce since earlier this year. Here’s what we know about Mulaney’s desire to get a divorce and whether or not the actor signed a prenup.

John Mulaney is out of rehab and doing stand-up comedy again

The Saturday Night Live writer entered a program for alcohol and cocaine use at the end of 2021. In February 2021, an unnamed source spoke about Mulaney’s recovery with Page Six After 60 days in rehab, the source said Mulaney was doing well, but “not ready to return to work.”

Now, three months later, Mulaney is back on stage performing stand-up. The City Winery in New York is hosting his first shows post-rehab. Mulaney’s sold-out From Scratch performances began May 10th, and according to Rolling Stone editor David Fear, Mulaney’s first show was “intense.”

The 90-minute show was “mostly processing his intervention and rehab experience,” says the editor’s tweet. “[Mulaney was] remarkably raw, vulnerable, [and] personal,” Fear continued. “‘When I’m alone, I realize I’m with the person who tried to kill me.’ Hilarious, harrowing, brave, historic.” Mulaney’s current jokes are likely dark because of his recovery and pending divorce.

John Mulaney asked for a divorce from his wife three months ago

Mulaney and Tendler got married in July 2014. Now, a few months before their seventh anniversary, Mulaney is ending their marriage.

“I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage,” Tendler’s representation told Page Six. According to the outlet, sources close to the couple say Mulaney asked Tendler for a divorce three months ago.

“I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery,” Tendler’s statement concludes. “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and [to get] back to work,” a spokesman for Mulaney told the outlet.

John Mulaney didn’t want a prenup before he got married

At this time, not much is known regarding Mulaney and Tendler’s divorce. But during a previous interview with the Opie & Anthony radio show, Mulaney said he wasn’t interested in getting a prenuptial agreement.

“How do you bring a prenup to a woman?” Mulaney asked at the time. “Everyone says, ‘Get a prenup!’ But for real how would you f*cking bring that up?”

During that interview, Mulaney said he would talk to his then-fiancé about getting a prenup, but it’s unclear if he ever did. The comedian also made a joke during that conversation about how his wife would “get sick” of him and their marriage would “end badly.”

Representation for Mulaney did not reply with comment regarding a prenup by the time of publication.
