A porta-potty door ended up in an obscure place Wednesday night after a tornado tore through Dunedin, Florida.
Tornado watches were issued for much of northern and central Florida on Wednesday night as a Gulf Coast storm rolled through the Sunshine State. Extensive damage is being reported in some areas, like roofs torn off buildings, felled trees, scattered debris and vehicles turned on their sides. At one point, the tornado appeared to have sent a portable toilet flying.
"Caption this! Port a potty door in a street light. Dunedin, Florida. From last nights Tornado warned storm," social media account @tropicalupdate posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday morning.
The post included a video that spanned a parking lot outside of a strip mall. As the camera zooms in, the video, which has been viewed more than 18,000 times, reveals a porta-potty door stuck near the top of a streetlight.
Users immediately took advantage of the opportunity to make jokes about the bizarre situation.
"[S***] hit more than the fan...." one person quipped in response to the video on X.
"just the national flag of Florida," another X user wrote.
"I've always heard the adage, "it's not THAT the wind is blowing, it's WHAT the wind is blowing," usually with a picture of a straw sticking out of a tree. But this is on a new level," one person said.
This actually wasn't the only porta-potty incident from the storms, either. Fox 13 reporter Ryan French posted a video on X from a Thursday broadcast that showed a beige porta-potty that matched the color of the door in the streetlight overturned on its side on a debris-stricken street in Clearwater, Florida, after the tornado. The overturned porta-potty appeared to have its door, though.
AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dave Houk told Newsweek that two tornadoes were confirmed in Florida Wednesday night. He said the National Weather Service has deployed teams to the area to assess the damage.
Houk added that the tornadoes hit overnight, which can complicate the situation further.
"It adds to the complications of warning people who are typically asleep during that time," he said.
As of late Thursday morning, more than 12,000 people in Florida were still without power according to a power outage map.
Tornadoes are not an uncommon occurrence in Florida, as the phenomenon can accompany hurricanes and tropical storms. Florida is one of the worst states for tornadoes, according to a report by Bankrate, which found that more than 70 tornadoes tore through Florida in 2022.
Mississippi ranked as the worst state for tornadoes in 2022 with 184 tornadoes, according to the report. Texas came in second with 160 tornadoes. Florida ranked fifth with 73 tornadoes and two fatalities from the storms in 2022.
A rare weather occurrence also joined the tornadoes, according to a post by AccuWeather on X, formerly Twitter.
"A rare supercell thunderstorm like you'd see in Tornado Alley formed in Brooksville, Florida, yesterday. Other storms nearby in Tampa and Clearwater Beach formed damaging tornadoes," AccuWeather posted with photos of the ominous storm.
